Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is 569,700 (mid-2015 est.) and it is one of the eight largest regional English cities.
In the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Known as the Steel City, many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield became the City of Sheffield in 1893.

November’s District Conference is the first to aim for ISO20121 Sustainable Events Certification.
Sustainability is important to all of us. It’s about using energy and materials and water and food in the most efficient way so that we can continue to enjoy our comfortable lifestyle. It’s about avoiding pollution and waste. It’s about doing all these things in a responsible way so that we maintain our lifestyle for our future and for our children’s future.
We’re very happy to be working with the Holiday Inn hotels in Sheffield, both of which have achieved Level 2 in the Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) Green Engage™ system. This is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainability in hotels is about a lot more than just not changing the towels every day. It includes:
• Using energy-efficient lighting and lighting controls.
• Installing water-efficient bathroom fixtures.
• Using energy efficient appliances and systems.
• Rainwater harvesting.
• Alternative energy sourcing.
• Improving indoor air quality.
• Increasing waste diversion.
• Sustainable event management.
