November’s District Conference is the first to aim for ISO20121 Sustainable Events Certification.
Sustainability is important to all of us. It’s about using energy and materials and water and food in the most efficient way so that we can continue to enjoy our comfortable lifestyle. It’s about avoiding pollution and waste. It’s about doing all these things in a responsible way so that we maintain our lifestyle for our future and for our children’s future.
We’re very happy to be working with the Holiday Inn hotels in Sheffield, both of which have achieved Level 2 in the Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) Green Engage™ system. This is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainability in hotels is about a lot more than just not changing the towels every day. It includes:
• Using energy-efficient lighting and lighting controls.
• Installing water-efficient bathroom fixtures.
• Using energy efficient appliances and systems.
• Rainwater harvesting.
• Alternative energy sourcing.
• Improving indoor air quality.
• Increasing waste diversion.
• Sustainable event management.
It also includes responsible procurement, which means that as far as possible all the food at the conference will come from local suppliers.
Your conference pack will be in a (recyclable) paper carrier and we won’t include a plastic bottle of water because 20,000 plastic bottles are sold worldwide every second and 93% of them are not recycled. Even recycling causes pollution and waste. The hotel will provide water at all times. Where there’s enough natural light (unlikely, I know, in November) we’ll turn the lights off. Recycling is better than landfill, so there will be recycling bins for anything you don’t want to take home.
You may have read in the press recently that the most significant action you can take to reduce your carbon footprint is to have fewer children. We can’t help with that, but the second most important action is to cut your car use.
While the car will be the only practical way of getting to the conference for many people, it’s good that many others will be coming by public transport. Sheffield is well placed by rail, by coach and not far from Manchester Airport.
If you are coming by car do you have a spare seat? Can you offer a lift? If you can, or if you need a lift please contact us and we’ll put you in touch.
“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
A lot of people say, “This is all well and good but nothing I do can possibly make a difference.” But somebody once said, “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
Let’s be part of a million.
